"I pride myself on our excellent customer service, and we have a wonderful relationship with our customers," says Jacquemin Farms manager Kerry Sullivan
. Since she operates a small family farm business, Sullivan is responsible for many jobs that would normally be separated off in a large farm. "In addition to opening and closing the store, harvesting and planting, I am in charge of customer relations, scheduling field trips and activities, managing employees, and keeping the accounting books."
A seasonal business that provides everything from high quality vegetables to pick-your-own fruits and pumpkin patch school field trips, Jacquemin Farms is a family operation that encourages families to visit together. Sullivan is proud of her efforts to expand the business and service the customers, "I know we are well-liked and respected for what we do. This business is my career path and my life's passion."
Sullivan's typical days change with the seasons. One season she can be keeping produce fresh and stocked, while a season later she can be in the field teaching young children the value of farming through hands-on pumpkin growing demonstrations. In addition to working on the farm, some days she travels to local farmers' markets to sell produce.
Sullivan proclaims that the best thing that any student should do is do what they love the most. "I am a firm believer in following your heart and dreams," says Sullivan. "The horticulture industry is very diverse and has a lot of niches that can still be filled." She says that many of the great ideas that horticulture has developed have come from people's ideas, enthusiasm, and work ethic. "All it takes is a lot of hard work and dedication."
