|As farm manager, Kevin Johnson is responsible for producing an economically viable green bean crop. His responsibilities include planting, harvest, contract growers deals, budget development, and accounting. Johnson prides himself in delivering a quality fresh market product that meets the standards of his customers.
"I expanded my crop knowledge base while enjoying time with fellow students when I competed with the Weeds Judging Team. I highly recommend getting involved in judging teams, clubs and finding good internship opportunities," advises the young manager, who still works closely with FFA.
Johnson enjoys the challenges of the volatile market and dealing with the supply and demand economics of produce. He also appreciates the work involved, "It's not a career where I am going to get bored, the majority of my time on farm is spent tilling, pulling sprayers, inspecting for diseases, and managing the cultivation of our crop."
Johnson also believes this speciality industry is ripe with opportunities for young agronomists because there is very little knowledge in this area.
"Without plants life as we know it would not exist, plants will clean toxic spills, fight cancer, and are our food supply," reminds Johnson.
