U.S. Botanic Garden Washington, D.C. Dedicated: 3 May 2002 The U.S. Botanic Garden, Washington, D.C., was honored at a ceremony held in 2002. Although chosen as a landmark site in 1999, extensive renovations were then taking place on the 68-year-old building. Those renovations were completed, and the facility reopened to the public on Dec. 11, 2001. ASHS President Dan Lineberger presented the plaque in a ceremony on May 3, 2002. Behind Lineberger as he delivered his remarks was one of the original specimens brought back by Lt. Charles Wilkes from his scientific voyage of exploration around the world in 1838. Some of the 10,000 plant specimens from that expedition formed the original, core collection of the U.S. Botanic Garden. Excerpt from article printed in the ASHS Newsletter March 2003
