In a ceremony on 28 July 2009, the Missouri Botanical Garden was dedicated as an ASHS Horticultural Landmark by the American Society for Horticultural Science. The honor is bestowed upon the highest tier of horticultural sites around the world and are chosen for their historical, scientific, aesthetic, or environmental excellence.

The award was presented to Garden President Peter H. Raven by ASHS President John R. Clark during a dedication ceremony at the Missouri Botanical Garden, which was held at the conclusion of the ASHS Annual Conference in St. Louis.

“It is a privilege for ASHS to return to St. Louis, the site of the Society’s very first annual meeting in 1903, and bestow the Landmark designation upon one of the premier botanical gardens in the world,” said Michael Neff, ASHS Executive Director.

The Missouri Botanical Garden is the oldest continually operating botanical garden in the nation, and is celebrating its 150th anniversary with special events and activities throughout 2009.

The Garden’s mission is “to discover and share knowledge about plants and their environment, in order to preserve and enrich life,” and is a center for science, conservation, education, and horticultural display.

The Missouri Botanical Garden is also listed as a National Historic Landmark.

Dedicated: 30 October, 2008

On 30 October, 2008, The American Society for Horticultural Science (ASHS) recognized the New York Botanical Garden (NYBG) as an ASHS HortLandmark.

The NYBG was nominated by ASHS member Amy Goldman, who is also a member of the Board of the New York Botanical Garden.

The Award was presented by ASHS President John R. Clark to Gregory Long, President of the NYBG. In a well-attended dedication ceremony, Clark spoke of the history of accomplishment in horticulture and botany at the Gardens. Long expressed gratitude and thanks from the Garden.

The NYBG is one of the premier gardens in the world. It is located on 250 acres in the borough of The Bronx in New York City and welcomes over 800,000 visitors each year who come to marvel at the horticultural displays.

The Garden was founded in 1891 on the grounds of the Belmont Estate, formerly owned by tobacco magnate Pierre Lorillard, after a fund-raising campaign. In 1967, it was dedicated as a National Historic Site. Garden highlights include an 1890’s vintage wrought-iron framed “crystal-palace style” greenhouse; the Peggy Rockefeller memorial rose garden; a rock garden; a 37-acre conifer collection; extensive research facilities; a 500,000 volume library, and an historical archive of over 7 million botanical specimens.

A wide range of botanical research is conducted by more than 30 Staff Scientists, a dozen Research Associates, and over 30 Graduate Students.

The Garden’s International Plant Science Center is a world leader in plant research and exploration and employs an expert staff of professional researchers, technicians, and assistants, including dozens of PhD scientists and candidates, in the fields of plant systematics, economic botany, ecology, molecular systematics, and plant genomics.
