  1. Horticultura Perfecta - must represent what the photographer believes to be the best of techniques and/or superior composition.  Minimal digital manipulation, such as image size cropping, is permitted.
  2. Horticultura in Obscura I - includes any images that are creatively composed/photographed in unexpected/unconventional ways. Images could be offbeat, unusual, uncommon, or photographed from an unlikely angle/perspective.  Of particular relevance are closeups, soft focus, shallow depth of field, and abstracts of any kind.  Minimal digital manipulation, such as image cropping, is permitted.
  3. Horticultura in Obscura II – Digital Manipulation and/or Enhancement: exclusively for images that have been creatively manipulated, enhanced, combined, significantly cropped, colored, refined, and/or sharpened.  Use of HDR techniques and special effects lenses or filters are also appropriate for this category.
  4. Horticultura Scientia –for any image derived from horticultural research at the micro or macroscopic level; images created using laboratory instrumentation are welcome.  Subject matter must have horticultural relevance.   Subject matter manipulation (e.g. tissue staining or other procedures) prior to being photographed is acceptable, but images, themselves, should not be digitally manipulated following creation.
