- About Us
As a horticulturist and assistant greenhouse manager for a 35 acre wholesale perennial and herb facility, Andrew Pratt oversees greenhouse production for a company that serves garden centers and landscapes across the state. "My personal duties include overseeing our main greenhouse under 1 acre of glass as well as 9 other houses," explains the recent OSU Landscape Horticulture graduate. "My responsibilities include performing and dictating tasks such as watering, fertilizing, chemical application, and transplanting."
Pratt credits his own internship experience at Holden Arboretum in Kirtland, Ohio with preparing him for his career. "I believe internships to be one of the most invaluable resources available from not only my own experience but others as well. Business and Spanish classes would also help any individual pursing a degree in this industry. Also most importantly a genuine love of plants is essential."
Since graduating from Ohio State, Pratt has explored many opportunities in the green industry. He first worked as a landscape manager for a large estate and has also explored opening his own landscaping business.
A true horticulturist, Pratt points out the significance of plants to everyone. "Without plants we wouldn't be alive. Plants provide us with the food we live on and the air we breathe. Plants also beautify any setting whether urban or rural." The seasonal nature of his work allows Pratt, "the opportunity to witness and study the complete cycle of many plants from spring flowering to fall leaf drop."
