"I enjoy working with plants. I get to order, care, and sell a product that enhances the beauty of our community and world," says Dennis Miller. While looking for work experience as a student, a classmate assured Miller that The Andersons was “the place” to work in retail, an employer that truly values horticulture students. Miller took the advice and started part-time garden center work immediately.
Miller’s responsibilities have changed over the years; now, he supervises over 35 full and part-time staff members. For Miller, "One of the great things about my job is that I don’t do the same things everyday. Working in a retail garden center requires that you be extremely flexible and know that plans you make will change." As manager Miller hires and trains staff, and develops sales, labor and expense budgets.
While attending OSU, Miller was a member of the Ohio State Marching Band and the Landscape and Floriculture Forum (LAFF) student organization. Miller attributes his success in horticulture classes to the other students, "We had a great group of students when I was taking my horticulture classes, and many of us still keep in touch."
Recently appointed to the ONLA Plant Selection Committee, Miller believes that the green industry is a great place to be and the career possibilities are endless. His most rewarding experience is just being able to work with plants, "It is hard for me to see myself in any other career that would not involve plants."
