"There's never a dull day in Extension!," exclaims Jane Martin. As Extension Agent for Franklin County, Ohio, Martin develops and conducts horticultural education programs focusing on home gardeners and the green industry, teams with other horticultural institutions and agencies, and recruits, trains, and utilizes Master Gardener volunteers. Martin's days are far from typical, but most do include interacting with volunteers, diagnosing a plant problem, and preparing educational programs. "An agent will also interact with all kinds of people, including professionals in the industry, home gardeners with various levels of expertise, the media, civic groups, and government agencies," explains Martin.

Martin enthusiastically describes her most rewarding experience as working with the Master Gardener volunteers since 1993, when she developed the program. "The volunteers have shown a tremendous level of commitment, and will do virtually anything for the good of the program. They have extended Extension's outreach in the county and multiplied my efforts tremendously."

While at OSU, Martin gained valuable experience in her internship with Franklin County Extension, which later turned into a full time position for her. She is currently a member of the OSU Extension Nursery Landscape and Turf team, where she gets a chance to network with university faculty and staff frequently.

Career opportunities in the plant sciences are what you make of them, and Martin believes that you must be willing to start somewhere in the field, even if not in a position you had in mind. Martin says, "A career in the plant sciences is a dynamic field that is constantly changing as new things and new uses are discovered. Plants are indispensable, providing a cornerstone for all life."
