As a county extension agent, Leanne Moorman has learned a thing or two about what it takes to be a great teacher and positive role model for those interested in the plant sciences. Moorman often begins her day with a trip to an elementary school to teach several different “hands-on” classes. “I like teaching kids how important plants are to their lives,” she explains.

Moorman enjoys organizing educational projects that take on a life of their own. “I organized the Farm Bureau in a rural WV county 10 years ago and it is still going and going very strongly. I also started the Agriculture Youth Fair that same year with the Farm Bureau members and that fair is still going strong. It gives 4-H and FFA youth in that rural county a way to learn responsibility and agricultural skills.”

Moorman believes the faculty was extremely beneficial to her learning experience while at OSU. “I was learning how to be a teacher while at OSU, and I learned many hands-on skills that have helped me in my 10 years as an Agriculture teacher and then in the 12 years that I've been an Agriculture and Youth Extension Agent." Moorman still utilizes OSU resources, such as

"In Extension the career opportunities are very good. Get as much hands-on experience as you possibly can and get into a classroom as early as you can to see if you really want to do it,” recommends Moorman. “No matter what career you choose, find a mentor. I believe that having someone to ask questions of, bounce ideas off of and provide support for you as a new employee is very important."
