As Education Programs Coordinator Melanie Blandford
stays busy managing many events at the Scott Arboretum. "I plan, organize, and execute lectures, concerts, workshops, bus trips, annual Arbor Day celebration, and tours. I also coordinate hospitality, catering, arboretum staff, volunteers, and AV staff."
Much of Blandford's responsibilities relate to promoting the arboretum. "I'm the editor and producer of quarterly newsletter the /Hybrid/, which promotes the Arboretum's events and provides current horticultural information. I create the schedule of events to advertise programs. I also produce a budget and summary report for each schedule of events. My work includes teaming with the Visitor and Member Programs Coordinator on special events, volunteer sessions, and public relations."
"I attend industry conferences such as AAGBA and PPA, and work closely with other public garden institutions in the area," says Blandford, who chairs both the Education and Concert Committee and the Perennial and Woody Plant Conference committees. "For current gardening practices I look to our library and its books, magazines, newsletters, and also the internet."
"I advise students to gain as much experience as possible, be it through internships, work experience, or course work. It helps to know what you'd really want to do, if you've had some experience doing it. I was able to attend grad school and gain applicable job experience as the Volunteer Coordinator for the UT Gardens. Being involved in a public garden on that level for 2 years contributed to my hiring and to my ability to manage my current job responsibilities."
