|Dr. Mike Arnold|
Landscape plants and practices are Mike Arnold's forte. "My research is related to the container nursery industry and landscape establishment. Most of our work centers around the effects of various production practices on the subsequent landscape establishment of woody and herbaceous landscape plants."
By bringing his research on plant materials to the classroom, Arnold hopes to stimulate students and impact the industry. "I think that the most rewarding experiences in my career have been the individual mentoring of students. The impact we have on others through teaching and stimulating learning is our most important legacy." says Arnold, who teaches courses in the areas of landscape plant materials, landscape maintenance and construction and research theory. "Helping to solve a problem for industry colleagues and help to make a change in landscape/nursery practices that results in better landscapes also ranks high as a rewarding experience."
Arnold says his interactions with the faculty, staff, and fellow students was his most important college experience. "Their mentoring was instrumental in my choosing to pursue a career in academia in horticulture. The faculty's enthusiasm and encouragement and the friendliness and family atmosphere from the staff and my fellow students made my choice of career more an avocation than a vocation."
He advises student to explore the options available to them. "Internships are a great way to test the waters in areas in which you think you might have an interest, but have no experience. Stretch your horizons by taking courses outside your conventional areas of interest and network with faculty, industry, and other students whenever possible."
