I must admit that I had not thought much about the name “Working Group” and certainly did not perceive that it may be thought of as anything other than members with mutual interest “working” together on topics related to that interest. However, as part of the information collected through surveys of graduate students and early career members, focus groups and discussion sessions with young faculty, and students at regional meetings (John Dole’s Reflections column in the June 2017, ASHS Newsletter), it was widely felt that the term “working group” was not as self-explanatory as I had thought. International Division News
I recently traveled to Bangladesh to visit a project managed by the Horticulture Innovation Lab at UC Davis in collaboration with the Nutrition Innovation Lab at Tufts University. The collaborative effort is exploring the impact of introducing three technologies to rural communities in Bangladesh on household nutrition and income. The three technologies, an improved solar dryer, small-scale cold room, and floating garden, were selected for their potential to increase year-round availability of nutritious fruits and vegetables. Congress is tackling a host of issues this month, not the least of which is the complicated maze of reforming our federal tax code. That alone has dominated other issues in recent weeks, including action on a new budget and a new farm bill. Once Congress returns from Thanksgiving recess, all eyes turn to the Senate as they finish their version of HR 1, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. Read full article.
Awards Nominations Information
The deadline for submitting an award nomination for the ASHS Professional Awards, ASHS Scholars Award, and the Industry Distinguished Achievement Award is February 4, 2018.
Nominations for the coveted ASHS Scholars Awards are now open. Two $1500 Scholarships are given each year to worthy Undergraduates enrolled in Horticulture or related majors. Each student must be nominated by his or her department Chair and must submit a 200-500 word essay in addition to other requirements which can be found at by clicking here.
