"Every morning I wake up knowing I'm going to spend my day involved in the field of golf course design. That's rewarding enough for me," exclaims Patrick Burton. "As an Associate Golf Course Architect my responsibilities include drafting and CAD production, routing, design and grading of golf courses, project coordination & on-site construction observation for Forrest Richardson projects."

"Construction and maintenance experience are crucial," says Burton, who prepared for this dream career by combining degrees in both landscape architecture and turfgrass science with work experience. "Easily my 3 summers working golf course construction and maintenance shaped my career – I instantly have credibility on any job site." Burton is currently providing construction observation services to projects throughout the southwest and Mexico.

A true student of golf course design and management, Burton organized a unique study abroad program while a senior at Ohio State. "I worked with scholarship donors and the university to coordinate an independent study of 35 of the world’s most influential golf courses. In 7 weeks, I drove to courses throughout Ireland, Scotland and England, spent the day with the course superintendent, photographed the course, took notes and played it. Afterwards, I drove to the next town, stayed in a youth hostel and did it all over again!"

Burton reminds students that nothing will be handed to them, "There is no substitute to be aggressive and start corresponding with professionals within the industry on your own. Make sure you are organized and always, always, always, thank the people that help you along the way."
