"When you deal with plants, you are inevitably dealing with people as well, and helping manage the relationship between the two. I discuss chemical and fertilizer problems as well as many other topics with a customer before processing an order," explains Stephanie Perez, a sales representative for J.R. Simplot.
"This is my first sales job, and I have learned that every person is different, and you must keep that in mind when meeting an individual and conducting business with him or her. My job is to sell and distribute chemicals, fertilizers, nutritional products and other necessary items to golf courses, landscapers, and lawn care professionals in central Ohio. I hope to be among the top sales professionals in my field."
"Internships are very valuable in making the final decision on what path to take and many companies are willing to discuss what is involved in their aspect of the industry," advises Perez, who interned with Syngenta Crop Protection. "My internship helped me prepare the most for my current career. I learned the basics of sales as well as made some contacts in the field before I even had a permanent job. It is important to love what you do, and if you love what you do, you will succeed and be fulfilled."
Perez reminds us of the importance of plants. "Without plants there wouldn't be any oxygen or food; they protect against erosion and provide animals with places to live. Plants are a major part of our recreational activities and may be an alternative source of fuel in the future."
