A plant buyer and landscape designer, Steve Coughlin
has worked for Barnes Nursery since his graduation from Ohio State 30 years ago. "This career combined plants and designing, my two favorite things." This diverse family business performs landscape design, installation and maintenance, provides lawn and tree care, operates retail garden centers and manages its own production nursery.
"Much of my success as a landscape professional must be credited to the efforts of Ohio State Horticulture Professors Phil Kozel and Elton Smith, who were inspirational, caring, proactive and excited about helping students," says Coughlin, who grew up on a farm and originally sought a forestry career. "The professors were excited about landscaping and encouraged us to pursue a career in this field. My classmates are active in the industry and many own their own companies."
Coughlin advises the young landscape designer to be willing to start at the bottom and move up. "This profession requires practical knowledge and people who are willing to work hard. Too many people want to be the foreman without any experience. You first must gain experience by working on the landscape crew, before you can be a good crew manager."
