Professor of Floriculture and Extension 4-H and Youth Programs at Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, OK, Doug Needham earned his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Purdue University in Horticultural Plant Breeding and Genetics.
At OSU Doug teaches four courses, including floral crop judging & design training in the Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture:
Doug actively develops multimedia applications for classroom and supplementary instruction, and he is an advocate for problem-based learning in the classroom. He serves on several committees at the University, College, and Department levels. Dr. Needham chairs the department's Scholarship Committee, Computing Committee, and Teaching Greenhouse Committee. He, also, coordinates the HORTECUS study abroad program for OSU.
Doug has a 25% 4-H Youth Programs Extension appointment. He works with Oklahoma's youth and their leaders through programs such as Oklahoma Ag in the classroom, 4-H Round Up, 4-H State Fairs, and FFA Career Development Events. He also serves as Conservator of Herbaceous Ornamentals and Programming Development Officer for the Oklahoma Botanical Garden & Arboretum (OBGA), a statewide network of affiliated botanical gardens, arboreta, parks, and zoos in Oklahoma. In cooperation with Dr. Lou Anella and the Department of Geography, Dr. Needham integrates his OBGA Plant Information Manager© (OBGA-PIM©) software with GPS and GIS data to serve the okPLANTid and okPLANTtrees web sites.
Dr. Needham has been recognized for his teaching and extension programs, receiving the Southern Regional Outstanding Teacher Award from North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture (NACTA), the Honorary State FFA Degree from the Oklahoma FFA Association, and the Regents Distinguished Teaching Award from the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources of Oklahoma State University.
Doug has served as President, Vice-President and Secretary-Treasurer of Pi Alpha Xi National and is a long-time coach of the Floral Crop Quality Evaluation and Design team at Oklahoma State. He is the developer and current administrator of Pi Alpha Xi National's Website: www.okstate.pax.edu. Doug served as host and chairman of the 56th National Intercollegiate Floral Crop Quality Evaluation and Design Competition held at Oklahoma State in 1997, and he was instrumental in the development of the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet template that is used each year to score and summarize the competition results.
For Doug's notable achievements and excellence in horticulture and for his faithful dedication to Pi Alpha Xi Honor Society's principles and successful operation, the Society is very pleased to present Doug with the 2003 Fellows Award.
