“As a vineyard operator and winery manager every day is different. Some days I'm in the vineyard, some days I'm in the cellar." It was during his time as vineyard manager for The Winery at Wolf Creek that Andy Troutman
learned valuable hands on training and incorporated his time researching soils, climates, and locations to establish a vineyard of his own in Ohio.
In 1998, Andy and his wife Deanna planted an acre of vines at the current location of Troutman Vineyards and in 2002 they purchased The Winery at Wolf Creek. “The fun part of my career is that it draws on so many disciplines. My college experience was very challenging and I recommend you concentrate your coursework on chemistry, microbiology, and plant biology. Knowing and understanding the fundamentals in these areas have proven extremely useful in wine production.”
“The most rewarding experience I have is watching the bottles of finished wine come off the end of the bottling line. Especially wine made from vineyards I've planted. Those bottles represent five or six years of preparation and work, and that moment gives me a great deal of satisfaction,” says Troutman, who earned the Young Professional Achievement Award from the OSU College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Science Alumni Society in 2003.
“My internship in the OARDC vineyard exposed me to the industry, and taught me what it takes to grow high quality wine grapes," Troutman suggests. "I'd recommend you spend a summer working for someone in the field . . . literally. Go get dirty. Help grow some grapes. Maybe even make some wine.”
