HortIM press release

ASHS is rolling out a new online publication to add to its suite of research publications (Journal of ASHS, HortScience and HortTechnology).  The purpose of HortIM™ is to provide a juried review system to recognize excellence in innovative, science-based teaching and outreach materials that do not fall within publication parameters of the three ASHS academic journals. HortIMprovides a valuable repository for online instructional materials that will be used in classrooms, laboratories, and outreach education by horticulture professionals and the general public.  The HortIM™ website ( is arranged as a set of collections in the following categories: Case Study, Lab Exercise, Instructional Video, Teaching Module, Fact Sheet, Bulletin, Article.

There is a $100 fee for contributing a submission to HortIM™ that is payable via the ASHS website.  Once the submission is received it will be reviewed by two reviewers and an editor.  The submission is either accepted or rejected without the opportunity for revision since most of these materials are already in print.  If the author wishes to revise a submission based on the review, it can be resubmitted for a fee of $50.

General information about HortIM™ and specific instructions for submitting an item can be found on the HortIM ™ website.  With additional questions, please contact Tim Rhodus at:

After submitting an item for review, questions about the review process may be directed to either Sue Barton at: or David Hensley at:

A variety of submissions have been accepted by HortIM™ during the pilot phase of the project and can be viewed on the website.  Each submission contains background information such as learning goals, appropriate audience, description, etc.  There is also a review summary written by the editor based on review comments.  The review summary provides users insight into how the submission might be used for teaching and outreach.
