HortTechnology is Moving to Open Access

The American Society for Horticultural Science has announced that, on January 1, 2019, HortTechnology will become an open access journal.

What exactly does this mean? How does this affect me as an author? As a subscriber? How does this benefit me as a researcher?

Benefits of Open Access

  • There is immediate access to the most up-to-date research
  • Reduced time from submission to publication (the wait for an entire issue to be released is eliminated)
  • Open Access makes it easier to comply with institutional and funding-related mandates associated with the publishing of your research
  • Potential increases in the scholarly impact and cited references of your articles
  • Authors will have one flat fee for publishing and do not have to be concerned with reducing the article size or supporting images, graphs and tables within their manuscripts to reduce cost
  • All communities have access to your research, bridging global and financial hurdles
  • There are no subscription fees for you, your university, your peers, or others working in related fields to be able to see your research
  • Articles can more easily be shared through other networks (for example, social media, Research Gate, etc.)

Timeline for Change in Process

The submission procedures and guidelines for submitting manuscripts will remain the same.

As of October 1, 2018, all manuscripts submitted to HortTechnology will be published online when the article receives final approval. The open access component will be effective January 1, 2019.
