|As Horticulturist and Urban Forester for Grove City, Ohio, Jodee Lowe cares for one of Central Ohio's premiere herb gardens, the Gardens at Gantz Farm. She enjoys the diverse job responsibilities that include working with volunteers, educating the public, and teaming with other environmental specialists in the city. |
"No two days are ever alike, which is what I like about my job," explains Lowe. "One day I may be out picking trees to be planted on the streets, the next day I may be watering and deadheading flowers at all of the parks in the city, and the next day I could be teaching a class on composting to the community."
"The OSU Experience that had the most effect on me was the friendships that I made with the other Horticulture/Landscape majors," says Lowe, who still networks with Ohio State alums in the industry. "The friendships that I made in Howlett Hall and on the Ag Campus will last for a life time."
Lowe recommends study abroad and internships for career development opportunities. “If you can study Horticulture in a different country…DO IT!!! I can only wish that I would have studied abroad myself! I know many people who have, loved it and signed up to do it another quarter! Do more than one internship if you have the time, there are many different roads that you can take in this field."
A true environmental steward Lowe reminds us that, "Plants make the world a beautiful place to live and without them there would be no oxygen for us to breathe."
